9 | Promises of God | You can Use Scripture to Overcome Negative Thoughts

In the book Battlefield of the Mind, Joyce Myers talks about how important it is, in your Christian walk to really take preeminence over your thoughts. The concept of taking power and authority over your thoughts is really important because as Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) puts it for as a man thinketh…so is he... and Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) succinctly states, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything flows from it”.

In short, these passages stress the importance of being mindful of your thoughts because your thoughts run your life. When satan tricked Eve he did it through her thoughts,

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” – Genesis 3:2-5 (NIV)

In that moment satan, tried to reframe the situation and twist Gods word, confusing Eve and resulting in original sin. But he didn’t stop there, he even tried to do the same thing to Jesus (described in the book of Matthew), trying to tempt him with lies. However, as we read in Matthew 4, each time satan tries to decieve Jesus he responds with “It is written…”. He used the word of God to overcome.

The really cool thing is that we can do it to! If you’re in a refining season choose one scripture that speaks life into your situation. Memorize it. And everytime a thought comes into your head that is not life giving, say that scripture. Focus on it. Repeat it over and over again if you have to, but stand on that. Stand on the word.

Because at the end of the day, it is written:

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. -John 10:10 (NIV)
